German naturalist, Johann Walbaum, identified this fish as Oncorhynchus mykiss in 1792. We&#039;ve known that rainbow trout is genetically closer to the Pacific salmon due to DNA testing. It&#039;s been Oncorhynchus mykiss for DECADES now.
